Understanding the family the family is the primary agent of socialization family social system - the complex network of relationships, interactions, and patterns of influence that characterizes a family with three or more members. Whether a traditional nuclear family or an extended family, families are best viewed as social systems traditional nuclear family - a family unit consisting of a wife/mother, a husband/father, and their dependent child or children. Children fare better when adult members of the family can effectively co-parent, mutually supporting each other"s parenting efforts. Coparenting - circumstance in which parents mutually support each other and function as a cooperative parenting team.
