Girls start their growth spurt at 11 and reach their peak growth at 12. Boys start their growth spurt at 13 and hit their peak growth at 14. 2-year difference between boys and girls can lead to awkward social interactions between. 11 and 12 yr olds growth is asynchronous; head, hands and feet grow first followed by arms and legs. Osteoporosis: a disease of the bones, they become brittle and easily break. Estrogen and androgen are present in prepubescent boys and girls at the same degree. Timing of pubertal events is regulated by genetics. Can be influenced by the environment (adolescent"s nutrition and health) Amenorrhea: the absence of a menstrual period in a girl who has achieved puberty. Menarche occurs younger in girls who experience a lot of family conflict, and who are depressed. Adolescents are very concerned about their overall appearance. Girls are more concerned, because of self-comparisons to young women in the media.
