PSYC 2220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1.3: Psychophysics, Sound Energy, Absolute Threshold
Document Summary
One way the perceptual process has been studied is be determining the following three relationships. Relationship a - the stimulus- perception relationship. The oblique effect - that people see vertical or horizontal lines better than lines oriented obliquely - at any orientation other than vertical or horizontal. Relationship a - the first stimulus relationship, is the stimulus-perception relationship, which relates stimuli to behaviour responses. The oblique effect has been demonstrated by presenting black and white striped stimuli called gratings, and measuring grating acuity, the smallest width of lines that subjects can detect. The second stimulus relationship is the stimulus-physiology relationship between stimuli and physiological responses. The physiology perception relationship related physiological responses(steps 3-4) and behavioural responses (steps 5-7) This means that subject were sensitive to the horizontal and vertical orientations. The physiological measurements were made using a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri)
