An initial issue in treating substance abuse is the person"s desire and readiness to change. The first approach involves using procedures to alter personality and cognitive factors that increase people"s risk of substance use. The second approach involves reducing its negative reinforcement. The third approach involves using a therapist, family member, or friend provide the user with positive reinforcement for stopping or reducing use. The fourth approach is cue exposure: decrease the impact of substance related cues in maintaining smoking, drinking, and drug use. Alcoholics anonymous: people who abuse alcohol are alcoholics and remain alcoholics for life even if they never take another drink, and alcoholics must commit to the goal of permanent and total abstinence.
