Anterior/rostral is front (toward beak); posterior/caudal is the back (towards the tail) Ventral: surface which faces the ground; dorsal: part which faces upright (back of head) Lateral: going toward the side from midline; medial: coming toward midline. Efferent signals signals from the brain towards effectors (e. g. , hand or eye) in other words away from the cns i. e. picking up a pencil. Afferent signals signals from effectors towards the cns (e. g. , sensory feedback from skin) i. e. someone touching you. The midbrain, as the name implies, is the middle division of the brain, located dorsal to the hindbrain and ventral to the forebrain-- midbrain - mesencephalon, one of the five major divisions of the brain. 4th ventricle; controls movements for fighting and mating: red nucleus (receives motor info from the cerebral cortex and sends it to the s. cord, substantia nigra: projects info to the putamen and caudate nucleus. The forebrain is the most dorsal division of the brain.
