Soemtimes our memories do no refer to specific events but are more encyclopedic. Allows us to take advantage of regularities in the word to make more accurate predictions about what will happen next. One concept brings relating memories closer to awareness. Based on shared aspects of meaning and similar concepts are metaphorically stored closer together. When a concept is activated, this activation spreads to related concepts. Semantic memories for commonly experiences aspects of life are schemas. During learning, schemas can be used dina number of ways. During retrieval, schemas can help reconstruct details that were forgotten. For standard sequences of events, people can use specialised schemas and scripts. These provide guide for people to know what the influences on memory, they do not always dominate. In the right circumstances people can disregard their schemas and scripts and more accurately remember the details that were actually encountered. Capture regulatrites about the world, so they are useful in predicting new situations.
