Document Summary

The moment babies enter the world they are surrounded by abundant cues signifying gender. Given gendered names and are outfitted in color-coded clothing, diapers and blankets. Infants 3-4 months can tell difference between adult female and adult male faces, at 6 months their voices, and 12 months match voice and face. Age of 2-2. 5 year they can label pictures of girls and boys. As children become more aware of their membership in a particular gender category, they begin to view their own gender more favorably than the other gender. Children at 2 years old they know certain objects are associated with females and that other objects and activities are associated with males. 3 years old they display knowledge of gender stereotypes for occupations and that increases rapidly between 3 and 5 and mastered by 6 or 7. Preschoolers demonstrate a rudimentary awareness of gender stereotypes for personality traits.
