Document Summary

Globalization of food production: land-grabbing and food (in)security. The readings for this week all focused on the neoliberal policies adopted by many states and the resistance of individuals from these states for protection, equal rights and assistance with issues of poverty and hunger. Manufacturing a food crisis article, focuses on the free trade markets and how they greatly impact individuals in regards to a standard of living; food and shelter. The article goes through examples in different countries and the impacts on the individuals living in the country to merely survive and fight for their lives. The nafta forced individuals indirectly into debt and under-development. In addition to agricultural and trade policies which favoured capitalist structures over small-scale farmers, nafta also forced governments to make changes to constitutions that allow the selling off of communal lands. Similar to the small documentary we watched in class recently, the lands would be privately sold to the higest bidder.
