The new social movements and the withering away of state theory. This week"s reading focused on new social movements and their characteristics, impacts and roles within the state. The authors focus on the crisis of the state after the shift in political orientations, the fragmentation of the public society, and the new social movements" role in a post-industrial economy. The term of new social movements as defined in the reading refers to an excess of new movements that have come up in various western societies since the mid. In the reading, the authors attempt to clarify that these new social movements significantly depart from the definition of what was considered conventional social movements. In the reading, i understood that the new social movements , instead of pushing for specific changes amongst public policy, basically emphasize social changes in individual identity, lifestyle or culture.
