Purpose and principles of sentencing - s. 718. The sentence must be proportionate to the gravity of the offense: a sentence should be increased or reduced to account for any aggravating or mitigating circumstances. For the benefit of a criminal organization. Abused a position of trust or authority. Utilitarian goals: focus on the future conduct of the offenders and those who might commit similar offenses, designed to protect the public from future crimes in the following ways: General deterrence - by discouraging potential people from the crime. Specific deterrence - discouraging the offenders from doing it again. Rehabilitation - curing the offenders of what made them do it. Incapacitation - to keep the offenders in jail to protect society. Retributive goals: the past is the focus of the retributive sentencing goals which include: Denunciation - expressing society"s disapproval of the behaviour. Retribution - making them pay for the offence. An eye for an eye: key concept - proportionality.
