“Why is legal reform an important aspect of the Mad movement?”
Legal reform can be described as the process of criticizing the existing policies and laws set in
stone and enforcing changes in the current law in attempt to bring justice to light. In relation to
the mad movement, legal reform continues to be extensive and suitably a relevant facet of the
modern MAD movement. It is important because it interprets how people with mental illnesses
are treated by institutions such as, the way police interact with people who suffer from a mental
illness. It has tended to move between allowing medical professionals considerable discretion
over the treatment and detention of people with mental illnesses and requires a more
comprehensive legal oversight of these processes. Legal reform in the MAD movement ensures
that people suffering from a mental illness get the proper care that they truly need. Legal reform
for mental health is the beginning of a system dedicated to providing a voice for mental health
patients and bringing them justice.
