COMM-100 FA4 Chapter 2: The Internet, Digital Media, and Media Convergence
Document Summary
The internet was developed in the 1960s as a military-government project. Computers were big and clunky and only a couple of them were available around the country. The original internet was called the arpanet - it allowed military and academic researchers to communicate on a distributed network system. Email was a huge step for the internet - it was created in 1971 by ray tomlinson. At this point the internet was mostly used at universities, government research labs, and corporations. During the 70s and 80s the net started to take an entrepreneurial stance. First came microprocessors, which helped made computers smaller and more powerful (the pc) Second, the fiber-optic cable enabled data to be transmitted more speedily. By then the net kept growing into a community of researchers, computer programmers, amateur hackers, and commercial interests. In the 1990s the world wide web was introduced by tim berners-lee.
