How is pediatric hearing loss classified: typically classified accordi(cid:374)g to it"s etiology, its (cid:373)a(cid:374)ifestatio(cid:374) a(cid:374)d i(cid:373)pact, a(cid:374)d its severity, etiology. Hearing loss results from many different causes. Experts consider the genetic or environmental cause, age of onset, and type of loss. In many cases the specific cause is unknown. The high-risk register identifies conditions present in infants that signal an elevated risk of hearing loss. 50% of the cases of congenital hearing loss result from genetic causes. Autosomal dominant hearing loss- one parent has a hearing loss and is a carrier of a dominant gene for hearing loss: child then has a 50% chance of having a genetic hearing loss. Autosomal recessive hearing loss- both parents carry a recessive trait for hearing loss, but neither exhibits hearing loss. Child has a 25% chance of congenital hearing loss which may come as a surprise to the parents.
