Memory- the ability to store and use information. Three stage model of memory: sensory memory- holds information in its original sensory form for a very brief period of time, usually about a half a second or less. We may smell, feel, see an experience. Iconic memory- a brief visual record left on the retina of the eye. Echoic memory- the short term retention of sounds: short term memory- temporarily stores a limited amount of information before it is either transferred to long term or forgotten. Getting to a restaurant after hearing directions. Working memory- the part of memory required to attend to and solve a problem at hand. Attending to a stimulus, storing information about the stimulus, and rehearsing the stored process. Capacity is between five and nine units of letters, digits, or chunks of info. Chunking- transferring what you know into a smaller set of meaningful units. Visuospatial sketchpad- a temporary store of visual or spatial info.
