Three months after their departure from egypt, the israelites reach mount sinai, where they then pitched camp in the wilderness. (ex. 19:2) god then tells moses to assemble everyone; however, no one is to come up the mountain, for all who touch the mountain must be put to death. (ex. 19:13) since no one could come up the mountain to see god, moses acted as a messenger between god and the people. God proceeds to deliver to moses the ten commandments. This is followed by a widespread fear of god by the israelites who back away from the mountain. Moses as the mediator between the israelites and god. God then proceeds to list a series of specific laws to moses. God then promises that he will help the israelites conquer. Finally, god summons moses and seventy elders to come up the mountain. However, only moses gets to go to the top, where god is.
