BIOL-2220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Atomic Nucleus, Ionic Compound, Ionic Bonding
Document Summary
2. 1 matter is the stuff of the universe and energy moves matter. With some exceptions, it can be seen, smelled, and felt. The mass of an object is equal to the actual amount of matter in the object, and it remains constant wherever the object is. Matter exists in solid, liquid, and gaseous states. Liquids have a definite volume, but they conform to the shape of their container. Gases have neither a definite shape not a definite volume. Energy has no mass, does not take up space, and we can measure it only by its effects on matter. The greater the work done, the more energy is used doing it. Energy exists in two states, and each can be transformed to the other. Kinetic energy does work by moving objects, which in turn can do work by moving or pushing on other objects. When potential energy is released, it becomes kinetic energy and so is capable of doing work.
