Wakka wakka: languages are declining because of high-technology communication, increasing international migration, & an expanding global economy all of which are reducing global cultural diversity. Symbols: symbol- anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share a culture, ex. Words, whistles, wall of graffiti, flashing red light, raised fist: society creates new symbols all the time. Chapter 2: values- culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful and that serve as broad guidelines for social living, beliefs- specific ideas that people hold to be true. Chapter 2: high culture- refers to cultural patterns that distinguish a society"s elite, popular culture- cultural patterns that are widespread among a society"s population. Subculture: cultural patterns that set apart some segment of a society"s population, ex. People who ride chopper motorcycles, korean north americans: many people participate in subcultures and don"t even know it, involve not only difference but also involve hierarchy.
