CHEM 1111 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Orbital Hybridisation, Unpaired Electron, Lewis Acids And Bases
Document Summary
Valence-shell electron pair repulsion (vsepr): used to predict the shapes of molecules and polyatomic ions. Basis of model: electrons in valence shell repel one another. Electron domain: a lone pair or a bond, regardless of whether the bond is single or not. Predicts that electron domains will arrange themselves to be as far apart as possible, thus minimizing the repulsive interactions between them. Electron-domain geometry: arrangement of electron domains around the central atom. 5 electron domain geometries: linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, octahedral. Molecular geometry: arrangement of bonded atoms (sometimes is the same as ed geometry) If unshared electron pairs are present, the molecular geometry will differ from the electron domain geometry. Bond angle: angle between two adjacent a-b bonds. The angle between any two a-b bonds that point in opposite directions is 180 degrees. Equatorial: on the trigonal plane (angle between any 2 of the 3 is 120 degrees)
