It is generally correct that more severe punishments have more of a deterrent effect than others. Jury nullification: not convicting an obviously guilty offender so they don"t have to pay the penalty. To some spending their whole life in prison is more of a deterrent. Pre-1975 (aka shitty with no real evidence) Compared murder rates in states that did and did not have the death penalty. Evidence failed to reveal positive effects of dp and deterrence. Also used data on police killings and prison murders. Many believe that the threat of dp causes less people to carry guns. Inmates and cos are no safer inprisons with or without the dp. Compared murder rates before and after the abolishment and reinstatement of the death penalty (furman decision)
