Species - any group of closely related organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. Carolus linnaeus created the system of scientific nomenclature: each species is given a binomial, or two-part name. First word: genus, or the group which the organism belongs. Second word: species epithet: the binomial is either italicized or underlined. Taxon: any taxonomic unit at any level of the hierarchy: as you move from species to genus, each taxon contains more organisms grouped by similar characteristics, the order of the taxonomic hierarchy: Kingdom phylum class order family genus species. The original 5 kingdoms, a system no longer accepted: monera (all prokaryotes, protista (single-celled or simple multicellular eukaryotes, fungi (uni- or multicellular, heterotrophic, food-absorbing eukaryotes, plantae (multicellular, autotrophic, photosynthesizing eukaryotes, animalia (multicellular, heterotrophic, consumer eukaryotes)
