The chapter begins with several scenarios involving language, home life and learning disabilities. Since 1972, diversity in schools has increased by 25. 8%, but diversity in schools is still sometimes seen as a barrier. Culture is a complex system of beliefs, practices, and attitudes that shapes behaviors that are shared by a group of people that distinguishes them from another group. There are various elements to culture, such as the values that are considered important. The dominant culture is the culture that is in power in a given area. Language is another element of culture, and it can affect the words/important phrases in a person"s vocabulary. Macroculture refers to the overall cultural aspects in a society and it tends to unify a large group together, whereas microculture refers to a group within the macroculture that might have distinguishing features such as language or behaviors. Socioeconomic status is an example of a microculture within the macroculture of the united states.
