Document Summary
Chapter 12: deceptive communication: the nature of interpersonal deception. Deception is a part of everyday (social) interactions. Deception- when a speaker transmits information knowingly and intentionally for the purpose of creating a false belief in the receiver. High-stakes lies- have severe penalties if caught (fraud) Low-stakes lies- have mild penalties if caught ( white lies ) The sender must know the information is inaccurate/false. The sender must be transmitting the information on purpose. The sender must be attempting to make the receiver believe the information. A person isn"t lying if they believe that what they are saying is true. A person isn"t lying if they don"t intend for others to believe what they are saying ( i"m so hungry i could eat a horse ) It is not possible for a person to lie to/deceive themselves (the sender and receiver are the same person; can"t believe something to be true when deep down you know its false)
