Psych 221 chapter 11 prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior: any act performed to benefit another person. Altruism: desire to help another person, even at your cost. Norm of reciprocity: expectation that helping others will increase chances that they will help us in the future: evolution of gratitude. People who have traits that make them more likely to survive are more likely to reproduce and pass traits to future generations. Social exchange theory: what we do stems from desire to maximize rewards and minimize costs. Increase likelihood that someone will help us in the future: relieve distress from watching person suffer, social approval and increased feelings of self-worth, helping decreases when costs are high (danger, pain, embarrassment, time) If you do not feel empathy, you see if there is something to be gained and/or would see her in class each week. Altruistic personality: qualities that cause someone to help others in a variety of situations.
