Appendix a: methods of adjustment and constant stimuli. In addition to the method of limits, fechner also proposed the method of adjustment and the method of constant stimuli. In the method of limits, the experimenter presents stimuli to a subject in either ascending order (intensity increases) or descending order (intensity decreases) in order to detect threshold. The method of adjustment is similar in that the stimulus intensity is either increased or decreased until the stimulus can just be detected. However, the subject (not the experimenter) adjusts the intensity continuously until he/she can just barely detect the stimulus. This just barely detectable intensity is taken as the threshold. The procedure can be repeated several times and the threshold determined by taking the average setting. In the method of constant stimuli, the experimenter presents 5-9 stimuli with different intensities in random order. On each trial, the subject says yes or no to indicate whether he/she can detect the stimulus.
