Communication is not an end in itself, but merely a means to an end. Communication is a tool that in the possession of someone knowledgeable and skillful, can be used to help solve most problems that arise in groups. Group members infer messages from nonverbal acts - possibly incorrect messages but potentially important ones. We do(cid:374)(cid:859)t al(cid:449)a(cid:455)s a(cid:272)hie(cid:448)e ou(cid:396) goals th(cid:396)ough (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)u(cid:374)i(cid:272)atio(cid:374). Myth 3: effective communication is merely skill building. The skills orientation to communication assumes that if you learn a few key communication skills you will become a better communicator. Myth 4: effective communication is just common sense. Learning requires a degree of humility, a willingness to recognize and address our shortcomings = no one knows everything about anything, everyone has more to learn. Language: structured system of symbols for sharing meaning. Symbols: representations of referents - whatever the symbol refers to: nonverbal communication: Sharing meaning without words - facial expressions, eye contact, personal appearance.
