The five cognitive abilities are critical to the functioning of humans in all aspects of life, and impairments to these abilities can result in disruption to individuals lives. Language: systems for communicating with others using signals that are combined according to rules of grammar and convey a meaning. Grammar: a set of rules that specify how the units of language can be combined to produce meaningful messages. Despite different languages and their cultures, all languages share the basic structure of involving a set of sounds and rules for combining those sounds to produce meanings. Phonemes: smallest units of sound that are recognizable as speech rather than as random noise. The difference between the vocal cords when pronouncing ba and pa because they differ in the ways they are produced by the speaker. Phonological rules: indicate how phonemes can be combined to produce speech sounds.
