Document Summary
Language is a system of human communication based on speech sounds used as arbitrary symbols. Studying language involves the study of meaning, meaning based on words, the way words are placed together, and the backgrounds and experiences of communicators. The word identification that we have been taught to go along with an image is known as a symbol. Language explosion theory- we build communication skills from the core of language we develop early in life. A dyad is a pair, such as mother-infant, father-infant, or sibling-infant. An infant is often paired into a dyad with the person that spoke to them the most. Significant other theory- centers on the principle that our understanding of self is built by those who react to and comment on our language, actions, ideas, beliefs and mannerisms. If we respect someone, we are likely to adjust our behavior to derive the most encouraging evaluation from that person.
