It looks at subjective meanings of things and the value that people give them. The question is why are things assigned a specific value in the world and others are not. For example, the american flag carries a lot of weight for some people but not as much for others. This is because people feel like it is or is not representative of the country in which we live. Often it is service members and families that create this significance for the people around them, but others don"t see the value behind it. Because of this dichotomy, flag burning is considered controversial. But if someone who does not value the flag has a conversation with someone who highly reveres the flag, there is a potential for their perceptions to be changed one way or another.
