Green"s mental illness had become apparent early in his life: he first received psychiatric treatment at the age of seven, when he was diagnosed with paranoia and treated fro more than two years. Both relatives ejected him from their homes because of his bizarre and potentially dangerous behavior. His father traveled to tennessee and tried to persuade green to return home to new york. Green refused, so his father left him in memphis with some. Two months later, green was arrested for murder money and a new pair of shoes. On the day officer wilcox was killed, green was found carrying what was apparently his only possession at the time, a pair of shiny black shoes. The jury rejected green"s insanity defense and convicted him of first-degree murder.
