Originated from way back as a consequence of chemical differentiation - the layers are distinguishable because of its composition, rock strength, and states of matter. Diff kinds of crust are result of plate tectonics. We guess, use sampling, use remote sensing. Crust is super varied in composition tho and unlike the mantle/core. Mesosphere - region of high temp but also high rock strength within the mantle around the core mantle boundary. Upper mantle - asthenosphere - aka weak sphere - balance between temp and pressure is such where rocks are weak - like butter - can be deformed - The mesosphere and asthenosphere are basically made of the same things but their physical properties are diff. Cooler, stronger, more rigid - near the uppermost mantle and all of the crust is lithosphere - aka rocky sphere - not made of rocks just rock strength.
