COM 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Extraversion And Introversion, Deeper Understanding, Nonverbal Communication
Document Summary
We spend more time listening each day than we spend speaking. Decoding requires a listener to translate messages into understandable symbols. Connotative meaning- the implied meaning of a word based upon its use within a given context. Denotative meaning- the literal or explicit definition of a word. Listening- the process of receiving, attending to, and assigning meaning to aural and visual stimuli. We take in lots of information but we only attend to some of the information. Listening requires mental energy: give selective attention; decide what sound you want to hear, assign meaning to the sound, decide how to associate it and store it if you want to recall it later. Hearing is the physical process of receiving sound. Listening is not only done with your ears, but also with your eyes. We tend to believe nonverbal communication when it directly contradicts the verbal message.
