PPE 3003 Chapter 10: PPE 3003 Chapter 10
Document Summary
For the individual, reality is what we perceive it to be (subjective) An actual situation is critical for how it affects our perceptions. Our individual perceptions are more important than what actually happened: basic assumptions: Formative tendency: rogers believed that all matter (including humans), has a tendency to evolve from a simple to a more complex system. Actualizing tendency: the tendency within all humans (and other animals and plants) to move toward completion or fulfillment of potentials. Involves the whole person-body and mind, thoughts and feelings, conscious and unconscious. Rogers believed that we grow from dependent to independent and from closeness to openness. The need for maintenance is similar to the lower steps on maslow"s hierarchy of needs. Enhancement is the need to become more, to develop, and to achieve growth: the self and self-actualization. An organized and consistent pattern of perceptions about oneself; a personality structure which is or can be made conscious.
