Gaps occur around letters with outward angles (w, y, t, v) Kerning table: speci ed spaces between problematic letter combinations. Metric kerning: uses kerning tables built into the typeface. Kerning headlines: spacing between h/a, t/a, t/o improves with optical kerning: tracking overall spacing of a group of letters (aka letter-spacing ) *white type on black becomes more legible when tracked. Normal tracking: capital letters, square, little distance from others. Loose/open tracking usually applied to capitals and small capitals: space & meaning express meaning through spacing, sizing, and placement of letters. Elimination: line spacing distance from the baseline of one line of type to another (aka leading ) 40: alignment centered, justi ed or ragged columns. Centered text: symmetrical (ie. invitations, certi cates, etc. )
