PSYCH 130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3.9: Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Rh Blood Group System, Umbilical Cord
Document Summary
Sometimes due to failure to stop breathing within a few minutes. Brain damage is likely if regular breathing is delayed more than 10 mins. Breech position: infants are positioned so that buttocks or feet are delivered first. Placenta abruptio: premature separation of the placenta requires immediate delivery. Rh factor incompatibility: when mother is rh negative and father is rh positive, baby may be rh positive. If fetus"s blood crosses placenta into mother"s bloodstream, mother will produce antibodies against the protein. If antibodies enter fetus"s system, they destroy red blood cells and reduce o2 supply. Firstborn child is rarely affected but danger increases with each pregnancy. Rh negative mothers are given vaccine to prevent buildup of antibodies. Second phase of cell death can occur hours after anoxia. Placement in head cooling device reduces secondary brain damage and increases behavioral assessment scores. Whole body cooling can also reduce death and disability rates.
