Cohort: group of people sharing a common characteristic. Tested same cohort over a period of years. Until late in life, intelligence stable: sometimes increased. Phase i"s problem was it was comparing people of two different eras. Phase ii"s problem: natural selection caused the people who were smarter to live longer and those who were not as smart to die and no longer contribute to the study. Adjusting for loss of participants, saw steeper intelligence decline: especially after age 85. Intelligence not one trait, but several abilities: speed of thinking tests may not be fair to older people. Fluid intelligence: ability to reason speedily and abstractly; tends to decrease during late adulthood.
