Document Summary

Phase i: cross-sectional evidence for intellectual decline: older adults gave fewer correct answers on intelligent tests than younger adults. The decline of mental ability with age is part of the general ageing process of the organism as a whole . Phase ii: longitudinal evidence for intellectual stability: the same cohort were retested over a period of years nding that their intelligence remained stable or even increased with age. When cross-sectional studies compared 70 & 30 year olds not only of two different ages but of two different eras. Cohort: a group of people sharing common characteristic such as from a given time. Phase iii: it all depends: longitudinal studies test those who survive to the end and may be bright & healthy people, intelligence less likely declining. It all depends as intelligence is not a single trait, but several abilities. (wisdom vs. fast thinking) Crystallised intelligence: accumulated knowledge & verbal skills (increase with age)
