Autism spectrum disorder: a group of related neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction and by restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests. Some children with asd are severely effected, but some are only mildly affected. Social interactions include: difficulty in understanding others emotions, difficulty expressing own emotions, forming attachments, developing relationships, deficits in joint attention. Some children do not speak: echolalia -- co(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) a(cid:373)o(cid:374)g those who do(cid:374)"t talk, difficulty understanding social meanings of language, take everything very literally hings b. Prevalence: boys are affected about 4-5 times more often than girls. Infrequent or poor imitation: no single words by 16 months, lack of smiling, not responding to name, lack of joint attention, loss of previously acquired language or social skills. Educational approaches: carefully planned and delivered lessons, continually evaluating and analyzing instruction, aba - applied behavior analysis have most consistent research evidence supporting their effectiveness.
