Help students remember steps of content strategy. Ensure content strategy steps are used correctly. Help student screen out outside distractions, improve motivation, and maintain effort. Self-regulation strategies should be an integral part of strategy instruction process. Students count and graph the number of practices they completed each day. More practice = remember more spelling words = better scores on weekly test. Set a goal for number of practices for the next day and draw a line on the graph (bar graph) Students need to be able to recall and use the steps in the regrouping process appropriately. Check off each step as they perform them. Increased accuracy levels and when checklists were removed performance was maintained. Self-instructions focus students on aspects of the task, cope with anxiety, deploy a content strategy, use the strategy, and self-monitor quality of story written. Explicitly teach and model both the content strategy and the self-regulation strategies.
