Arabic is the dominant language and islam is the leading religion of north africa. European languages, religions, educational systems, and political ideas were adopted and modified. The slave trade transferred african peoples, religious systems, and musical traditions throughout the western hemisphere. Sub-saharan africa is the largest landmass straddling the equator. Dominated by extensive areas of geologic uplift that formed huge elevated plateaus. Great rift valley forms a complex upland area of lakes, volcanoes, and deep valleys. A series of plateaus and elevated basins dominates the african interior. Elevations increase toward the south and east. Low africa = includes western africa and much of central africa. Great escarpment a high cliff separating two comparatively level areas. Begins in southwestern angola and ends in northeastern south africa. One extensive area of mountainous topography is in ethiopia: lies in the northern portion of the rift valley zone. Ethiopian plateau forms the headwaters of several important rivers.
