Document Summary
Break glucose into pyruvate, used in the citric acid cycle; main goal of glycolysis. Putting in a lot of atp to synthesize glucose. The free atp given off in the reaction is used to drive another reaction. The intermediates cannot be shuttled into the mitochondria without the phosphate group. Add phosphoryl group to glucose (traps glucose in the cell) Convert phosphorylated compounds into compounds with high phosphate: the likeliness of the phosphate group being given off to generate atp, the higher the potential for adp to pick off the phosphate to generate atp. Couple the hydrolysis of compounds with high phosphate group transfer potential. Overall strategy allows the energy of glucose oxidation to be harnessed to synthesize atp + reducing power (nadh) Atp represents a good compromise; the middle man. Does the phosphate energy needs to be higher than the synthesis of atp. Shuffle the phosphates in order to synthesize atp, needs to be more negative.
