BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Protein Structure, Peptide, Ribosome

22 views2 pages

Document Summary

Ribosome uses information in rna and specific trna"s to form a polypeptide. The polypeptide folds into a 3-d structure that carries out a specific function. Protein structure is defined as primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary. A mutation within a gene that alters protein shape and function. Ras takes signal from surface receptor and transmits it inwards. Ras protein has 2 states: active and inactive. In the absence of the signal to divide, it acts solely as inactive. When signal is given, converts into active state and passes on signal to the next molecule in the pathway and converts right back to the inactive state after passing the signal. In cancer, instead of ggc, there is a gtc. This makes the protein unable to revert back to its inactive state, and therefore is constantly passing on the signal to divide. Mutation within the regulatory region of a gene, alters timing and amounts of protein and function.
