BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Protein Structure, Peptide, Ribosome
Document Summary
A mutation within a gene that alters protein shape and function. Ras takes signal from surface receptor and transmits it inwards. Ras protein has 2 states: active and inactive. In the absence of the it acts signal to divide, solely as inactive. When signal is given, converts into active state and passes on signal to the next molecule in the pathway and converts right back to the inactive state after passing the signal mutation. In cancer, instead of ggc, there is a gtc. This makes the protein unable to revert back to its inactive state, and therefore is constantly passing on the signal to divide. A copy of the (cid:494)myc(cid:495) gene is moved from its normal position on chromosome 8, to chromosome 14 where it is controlled by a promoter that responds to infection (part of the immune system) If expressed at the wrong time, in the wrong cell type, the myc gene stimulates the cells to divide continuously.
