BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Tetrodotoxin, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Sleep Deprivation
Document Summary
Memory consolidaion (coninued: post-learning sleep enhances consolidaion of explicit / declaraive memories (those accessible to conscious recollecion). In addiion to increasing amount of informaion in memory, sleep also stabilizes the memory traces makes them more resistant to interference: proposed that hippocampal memory traces are reacivated during sleep and transferred to sites in the cortex. Sleep can also improve implicit or non-declaraive memories. Can make motor skills more stable and resistant to interference. Consolidaion during sleep can also produce a gain in skill. Sleep (especially rem sleep) has an enhancing efect on emoional memories. Amygdala: area of brain crucial role in making signiicant experiences more memorable. The amygdala has been implicated in the generaion of the most rudimentary and profound of human emoions, including fear, sexual desire, rage. e. g. its neurons become acivated in response to human faces. The amygdala is directly connected to the hippocampus, and interacts in memory.
