Document Summary

Allometry- the relationship between changes in shaoe and overall size. Interspecific allometry- refers to the same kind of phenomenon among species. Metabolic rate allometry- relationship between organism body mass and metabolic rate. The allometric relationship between body mass and standard metabolic rate (smr) Therefore 1 whale= 10,000,000 mice; but 10,000,000 consumes oxygen ~1000 times more rapidly than 1 blue whale. In isometric relationships increases in size result in proportional increase in another parameter. In allometric relationship the value of the parameter increases more slowly than the increase in sixe (ie. proportionality not maintained) Allometric relationship between standard metabolic rate and body mass (mammals and birds) Negative slope for mass-specific metabolic rate (mr/g) versus body mass. Applicable with zookeepers and vets for giving medication. Drug doses depends on how fast the drug will be metabolized. We see this scaling in all animals so we can"t use this as an argument. Metabolic rate/g tissue scales allometrically with body mass.
