Reversible (methoionine sulfoxide reducatse: some of these become irreversible oxidized. The heavily oxidized one is what you would see in fibrils and tangles in neuroxidative diseases (alzimers and parkinsons) Protein targets of redox regulation: cell cycle, differentiation pathways, apoptosis. The redox environment of a cell can influence cell growth. When hepatocytes are treated with a chemical antioxidant, they grow much more slowly: hydrogen peroxide is a proven mitogen (inducer of mitosis, you need normal amounts to progress in the cell cycle. Cancer cells typically have very low levels of mnsod. Mnsod protein levels measured in human pancreatic tissue, and in pancreatic cancer cell lines. When mnsod levels are increased in a cancerous cell line, cell growth slows down. Most of these cell lines are biospied from someone"s cancer and then a group of researcher do experiments on them. The rate of growth slows down when mnsod is added; we know it"s a redox regulator.
