Dysfunctional family: a family in which the interaction between family members inhibits rather than enhances psychological growth. The ability to sustain genuine intimacy is largely developed in the family of origin. Even the most pristine families are a bit dysfunctional. Children raised in dysfunctional families face tremendous obstacles to grow up to be healthy however with counseling and support children from even the worst homes have proved resilient. Many adult children of alcoholics (acoas) claim that they have become involved in unhealthy relationships and have difficulty trusting others have had problems communicating with partners and difficulty defining a healthy relationship. Survivors of sexual, emotional and physical child abuse also struggle with intimacy problems. Witnessing domestic violence can also contribute to this. Jealousy: an aversive reaction evoked by a real or imagined relationship involving a person"s partner and another person. Jealousy is a sign of underlying problems that are a significant barrier to a healthy, intimate relationship.
