Unions emerge from and are a product of the fundamental difference of interests between workers and employers (jackson, pg 2) Great majority of working ppl gain their livelihood through paid work (selling their capacity to labour-lp) to employers for a wage/salary=workers. Employment relationship: workers agree to work under the direction of an employer in return for a wage. Place of work, hrs, labour process etc determined by employer (power relations in the wp) Working conditions, intensity/pace of work, length of work day, labour saving. Distribution of wealth/surplus how much goes to profits and how much to workers" wages/salaries (economic pie) worse off when wages cut. In private firms, employers want to pay less and make jobs more intense maximize profit. A fair day"s wage for a fair day"s work (what defines this?)
