Phillip morris published 4 articles in the journal food and chemical toxicology in. They concluded that analyzing 51 tobacco additives there was no substantial toxicity associated with their use in tobacco products. Wertz et al reanalyzed their original raw data and came up with vastly different results. They found that 15% of the carcinogenic additives were present by 20% larger amounts than were published by philip morris, especially in the case of acrolein. Wertz et al noted that many of the additives increased the amount of total particulate matter (tpm) produced by smoking the cigarettes. They also found that the tobacco industry did not analyse the increase in production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In their reanalysis of the in vigo studies. Wertz et al (2011) found that the use of only 9/10 rats per group for 90 days as exposure measures dramatically underestimates the long term real world exposure to such toxins.
