Cultural objects have meaning beyond their material reality: examples, dogs companionship, loyalty, service dogs, protection, food, pollution, tattoos historically (sailor, biker, ex-convict, military), now it"s symbolism. Behaviours take on particular meanings in particular social contexts. Cultural sociology describes and analyses these systems of meaning. Humanities perspective: culture is autonomous from society. Sociology: culture is influence by social factors, link between culture and society. Institutions rely on each other to meet needs. Idealize or sensationalize aspects of social experience.
