Remember, according to physicalism, mental states are brain states: almost all funcionalists are physicalists. David chalmers is like the only dualist funcionalist: however, they are separate categories of thoughts. Fa fb v ga gb etc. Fb fa v gb ga etc: remember, funcionalism has to do with muliple realizaions: When more than one thing can occupy a funcional role, which someimes happens. Ex: in humans, we say that pain = c ibres iring: took aliens and found that they have pain too. Their pain = g ibres iring: this is our idenity, so then c ibres iring = g ibres iring, not: c ibres = g ibres. They say: pain is the funcional state/causal role filled by c ibres iring (pain is puncture of the biological blah blah: so they talk about what things do versus what they are. What it is for: table is a man-made object whose funcion is to have people sit on it.
